Touchstone Center
for Crafts is a local, regional and national center committed to advancing
excellence in the crafts through quality educational programming for people
of all ages and abilities. Touchstone is Pennsylvania's only residential
arts and crafts facility and only one of ten in the nation.
Touchstone was founded
in 1972 as Pioneer Crafts Council to foster interest in and preservation
of traditional mountain crafts. Through the years, the curriculum has
expanded to include contemporary and sometimes experimental, state-of-the-art
techniques in addition to traditional and historic methods in disciplines
such as blacksmithing, ceramics, metals, textiles, glass, oil and watercolor
painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture. Touchstone's scenic,
150 acre wooded campus provides a pristine, natural setting for physical
rejuvenation and creative expression. Both weekend and week-long classes
are offered and are taught by some of North America's finest artists and
artisans, and interaction from discipline to discipline allows cross-media
experimentation and a friendly exchange among students. The summer-long
children's program enables families to explore visual art together in
a "learning" vacation.
Services of A.L. Brourman
were retained to conduct a feasibility study and provide fund-raising
counsel for a $2.2 million campaign for campus improvements and construction
of a blacksmith studio, museum, and lodge/administrative
offices.
